Over 2,000 Palestinian’s gathered in Gaza with red and Palestinian flags protesting the lockdown at the Egypt and Israel border.

2,000 Palestinian’s gathered at the Erez border crossing with Ireal in Northern Gaza protesting the closure of the borders with Israel and Egypt.

The protests at the Erez border was called by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and other left wing groups.

One of the protests organisers, Ramzi Rabah, of the DFLP said “We call on the world to stop the siege of Gaza and to come to the defence of Palestinian workers in all Palestinian territories,”

Another protest which involved a sit-in against the blockade by another batch of a few hundred protesters also took place. Demonstrators were reported to have said that the blockade at the borders where smuggling tunnels have also been closed by both Israel and Egypt governments have caused high unemployment at impoverished areas.

Hamas have also issued a statement saying they will support workers in the Erez border which is an impoverished area in the country, and urged Egypt to open it’s borders with the Gaza strip.

The statement wrote “Hamas supports all workers, especially those suffering until the end of the siege and the reopening of the crossings,”.

Hamas have also called for Islamic nations to issue pressure on Egypt to reopen the crossing between Gaza and Israel.

Both Israel and Egypt have targeted smuggling tunnels at the borders of the Gaza with Israel and Egypt borders which have been used by smugglers to get food from one side to another, especially since June 2007 when Hamas took control of the Gaza strip.

The statement continued “We ask the Egyptian leadership to stop killing our workers by gas that is illegal under international law,” which referred to four Palestinian’s who were trying to make a cross-border smuggling tunnel to Egypt but were poisoned by gas pumped under ground, an incident which Egypt denies.
