Massive explosion in Ugchelen
Presumably explosive device detonated in Ugchelen at emergency shelter for asylum seekers to be opened
A explosive device is believed to have gone off at an uninhabited emergency shelter in Ugchelen shortly after midnight.
The building on the Nijenbeek was severely damaged. Windows were shattered, the hall was littered with glass and the facade was charred black, according to images from a local photographer.
A loud bang was reportedly heard in the vicinity of the former school building. At that time, only a security guard was present in the building. He was unharmed. The police are investigating the incident, reports Omroep Gelderland.
The building was to be put into use as a temporary shelter for asylum seekers next Friday. The former school would offer space for a maximum of one hundred people until the end of the year, writes the municipality of Apeldoorn.
This shelter is intended for times when there is not enough space in the registration centre in Ter Apel.
The arrival of the shelter caused unrest in the area this week, especially among parents of the adjacent primary school, Omroep Gelderland writes.
This week, banners were hung at the building with texts such as ‘Not next to our children, we must prevent that’ and ‘Another decision, period’.
