In a major setback to car manufacturers in India, three top carmakers Maruti Suzuki India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ford India have reported decline in sales in the month of May.
New Delhi, June 1/Nationalturk – The major car makers Maruti Suzuki India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ford India have reported sharp decline in sales in the month of May.
Officials of Maruti Suzuki India said the company reported 13 percent decline in domestic sales at 77,821 units as compared to 89,478 units in May last year. “The company’s sales of mini segment cars, including M800, A-Star, Alto and WagonR, rose by 5.1 percent to 31,427 units, its compact cars, including the popular Swift model, saw a decline of 29.4 percent in sales at 17,147 units during the month”.
Similarly, Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported 35.33 percent decline in domestic car sales. The company’s car sales in May stood at 10,023 units as against 15,501 units in the same month last year.
“The market continues to be sluggish. We have corrected the dealer’s inventory levels and have been able to bring it down to less than 30 days,” Toyoto Kirloskar Motor Deputy Managing Director and COO (Marketing and Commercial) Sandeep Singh was quoted as saying by media.
In a related development Ford India has also reported 22.46 per cent decline in total sales in May. “The company sold 5,993 units in May 2013 as against 7,729 units in the same month last year”.
Reports said the company exported 1,991 units last month compared to 1,693 units in the year-ago period, registering a growth of 17.6 per cent.
A senior official of Ford India said they were confident of the long-term potential of the Indian market.
