Jerome Valcke, secretary general of the International Soccer Federation (FIFA), informed the media media Thursday that the Maracana Stadium will be the host for the 2014 World Soccer Cup Final match.

“It is evident already, though we think that other Brazilian cities can host the final game. The Maracana Stadium already hosted the final match 61 years ago. Now, what we have to decide is where the semifinals and the World Cup opening matches will be played,” Valcke said.

Maracana Stadium Capacity down from 200000

The Maracana Stadium, a very symbolic, emblematic facility for Brazilian soccer, is being renovated and updated for the 2014 World Cup. Although the paid attendance at the final game of the 1950 FIFA World Cup was 199,854, the stadium currently has a capacity of 82,238 seated spectators.

According to organizers, the total cost of the renovation will be around 660 million dollars.The stadium reopening is forecasted for early 2013. Maracana Stadium’s new capacity will be ca. 85000 seated fans.

The 2014 World Soccer Cup will be disputed from June 14 to July 12 in several Brazilian cities.
