South Africa’s former president and national hero Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital following admission for a lung infection.
Nelson Mandela was discharged after spending 18 days in hospital where he also underwent surgery to remove gallstones.
The 94 year old former president spent Christmas at the hospital too after being flown out from his home in Eastern Qunu to a hospital in Pretoria.
Mandela was diagnosed with tuberculosis towards the end of his 27 year tenure in prison.
South African official media stated Mandela will now continue to receive treatment at his Houghton home until he fully recovers.
South African President Jacob Zuma joined Mandela and his family on Christmas at the hospital.
“We found him in good spirits. He shouted my clan name, Nxamalala, as I walked into the ward! He was happy to have visitors. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making,” said Zuma.
