Second shock for the Manchester United in the same week, ended in a draw easy should win against Chelsea in FA Cup 6th round match.
Ferguson angered Benitez, who said he ignored his attempt to shake hands in the technical area before the FA Cup quarter-final. And in retaliation Benitez did not wait to shake Ferguson’s hand after the 2-2 draw, preferring to walk on to the pitch to celebrate with his Chelsea players after they had battled back from 2-0 down to force Manchester United to a replay.
The forthcoming international break and Chelsea’s involvement in the Europa League means the date of that game will be decided today after talks between both clubs and the FA.
The winners will meet Manchester City in the semi-final while Wigan will take on either Blackburn or Millwall in the other tie.
Benitez said: “Why not shake hands? Ask him. Ask him. You are brave enough, ask him. I was waiting [before the game] but he walked past me. I have education because I know a lot of people are watching so I know what you have to do.”
Amidst the controversy United defender Rio Ferdinand is facing a possible FA charge after TV cameras caught him barging over Fernando Torres in an off-the-ball incident late in the game.
Goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney put United 2-0 up after only 11 minutes but Chelsea fought back in the second half with strikes from substitute Eden Hazard and Ramires. Only a brilliant last-minute save by David de Gea from Juan Mata prevented United crashing out of a second competition in a week.
Benitez added: “We deserved to win. They had everything in their favour – they played on Tuesday at home, we were playing in Romania on Thursday and then travelling again. We had a good team spirit.”
Ferguson admitted United were lucky but blamed the energy spent in their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in midweek for their sloppy second-half display.
He said: “We are lucky to still be in the FA Cup. It was a terrific save by De Gea. If they had scored then we were out. We ran out of legs. Chelsea were by far the better team in the second half.”
Meanwhile, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan described a potential Wembley date with Blackburn as a “dream” – and revealed he may lead the team out himself.
Whelan played in the 1960 final for Rovers but a broken leg forced him off.
“I feel I’ve got unfinished business at Wembley,” he said.
As a result of yesterday’s semi-final draw, either Wigan, Blackburn or Millwall are likely to take a Europa League place, meaning sixth spot in the Premier League will not qualify for Europe.
