Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Naseem said that Sri Lanka’s booming tourism industry will compliment Maldives’ aim to increase tourist arrivals by over a million this year.
“It’s widely perceived that the countries compete in tourism. However in the reality we can compliment each other in the issue. Sri Lanka doing well in tourism means for Maldives also wellfare in tourism, and it’s mutual benefit,” Naseem stated.
He said, Sri Lanka has become a hot spot for tourism since the war there has ended. “The Eastern coast of Sri Lanka is the most beautiful beach coast in the country and will certainly attract more tourists. So is my countries islands and beaches.” Naseem said that Maldives is looking forward at this prospect and are expecting the tourist arrival numbers to exceed one million this year.
The Maldives ended 2010 with the highest number of tourist arrivals ever received. 791,917 tourists visited the Maldives from January to December 2010 – as it rose significantly by 20.7% compared to 2009’s 685,852.
