Anyone traveling to the Maldives will no longer be allowed to bring e-cigarettes into the country from November 15th.
The Foreign Office points this out. It concerns “any type of e-cigarette”. This also applies to shisha and flavored cigarettes.
The import ban also applies to tobacco and tobacco accessories, with one exception: travelers aged 18 and over with a tourist visa are allowed to bring in up to 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.
Depositing e-cigarettes at Maldives airport
The goods can be deposited at a special counter at the airport upon entry against a receipt and picked up again upon departure, according to the Foreign Office in its travel advice.
The Maldives are located in the Indian Ocean and are a popular long-haul destination for German holidaymakers, especially in the winter months.
Bans also in other countries
Good to know: The import of e-cigarettes is prohibited not only in the Maldives, but also in other countries. In Thailand, for example. The sale and purchase of e-cigarettes, tobacco heaters and other vaporizers in the country is prohibited and can be punished with a high fine or imprisonment of up to five years, writes the Foreign Office. E-cigarettes are also not allowed to be imported into Singapore, among other places.
In Australia, there has been an import ban on all types of vapes since March 2024, unless a special license or permit is available.
It is therefore advisable to find out about the respective regulations in the holiday country before traveling. Because changes are also possible at any time.
