Lewis Hamilton wants to change names

The Formula 1 record world champion talks about his family and a special plan – which would mean that Lewis Hamilton would be spoken differently in the future.

Lewis Hamilton would also like to use the surname of his birth mother, Carmen Larbalestier, as a token of appreciation.

“None of you may know that my mother’s name is Larbalestier and I’m in the process of putting that in my name,” revealed the seven-time Formula 1 world champion on Monday at a sponsorship appointment at Expo 2020 in Dubai, just days before the start of the 2022 season of the premier class.

The Mercedes driver “doesn’t quite understand the idea that a woman loses her name when she gets married.” And further: “With my mother, I really want her name to continue with the name Hamilton.”

“We’re working on it”

Lewis Hamilton is the biological son of Carmen Larbalestier and Anthony Hamilton. However, the couple divorced just a few years after the birth of their son. Hamilton’s mother later married Raymond Lockhart.

Name changes in England are comparatively easy as they are not subject to any special public law restrictions. Almost curious: Hamilton can even take care of the process online, he would have to pay 42.44 British pounds (equivalent to just over 50 euros) for a corresponding official document.

The 37-year-old wants to take care of it soon. “Hopefully soon, I don’t know if it will be this weekend but we’re working on it,” said Hamilton, laughing. The first Grand Prix of the year is scheduled for Sunday in Bahrain.
