Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu new leader of opposition Party CHP
Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has been elected has the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) after receiving a record 1189 votes out of the 1197 from the CHP delegates. Eight of the votes were counted as invalid.
Kılıçdaroğlu will now be the 7th leader of Turkey’s oldest Party, after important leaders such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (co-founder), Mustafa İsmet İnönü (co-founder), Bülent Ecevit and Deniz Baykal (the last leader of the Party) all took the post.
After Kılıçdaroğlu’s candidacy was presented to the 33rd General Assembly with 1200 signatures of the 1250 CHP delegates, a decision was made by the Assembly to take votes a day early on Saturday rather than waiting for Sunday.
A total of 1197 votes were counted, with Kılıçdaroğlu receiving 1189 votes, with eight votes counted as invalid.
After hearing of the news, Kılıçdaroğlu went up to the platform where he made his acceptance speech.
Kılıçdaroğlu had come to the Atatürk Sport Hall, where the assembly took place, with CHP supporters chanting “Prime Minister Kemal” and “Ghandi Kemal”.
Kılıçdaroğlu Speech
Kılıçdaroğlu, at his speech for the first time as the CHP leader and gave huge fighting talk with his primary targets being Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the government.
Kılıçdaroğlu said “I am going to site on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (co-founder), Mustafa İsmet İnönü (co-founder), Bülent Ecevit and Deniz Baykal (the last leader of the Party). I am aware of the difficulty of the post I am taking. The people who sat on this chair always worked for the well being of the people, and not themselves and that’s what we are going to do.”
“I am not going to work, we! are going to work!, we are going to produce, we are going to work, my biggest wish is to make the CHP go into office.”
“We want a country where modernization is the norm, where there is piece and where no one goes hungry. This is our citizens will, and it is also ours.”
Kılıçdaroğlu, then surprised many of the CHP delegates, members, supporters waiting both in and out of the hall and members of the press by attacking the government and the Prime Minister on his very first speech.
“The AKP (Justice and Development Party, ruling Party) is going to answer to questions. They are taking everything away from everyone, they are even trying to take your trousers from you. We are going to go where ever they run.”
One of the most talked fragment of Kılıçdaroğlu’s speech was the new leader calling the state run TV channel TRT (Turkey Radio Television association), the “Tayyip Radio Television Association” after blaming the government of controlling the media.
Kılıçdaroğlu also got attention for not referring to the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan as Sayin (honorary) Recep or Erdogan but just simply said Mr. Recep when reffering to the Prime Minister.
Kılıçdaroğlu spoke of many issues with the delegates and the CHP supporters regarding the Government and also the CHP.
Some experts are calling the speech “an introduction to Turkey not just the CHP” after the new opposition leader managed to hit so blows to the government from day one of his post.
