Kashmir lawmaker placed under house arrest

Srinagar, June 7: In the first incident of its kind, a lawmaker of Indian Kashmir assembly, Sheikh Abdur Rashid was placed under house arrest by authorities to prevent him from staging a sit-in during Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s 2-day visit to the region against the Human Rights abuses committed by Indian soldiers.

srinagar protestsRashid, who was denied permission by the authorities to stage a sit-in in city centre on Indian premier visit to Indian Kashmir, tried to take out a procession alongwith his supporters on Monday to protest the recent killing of three youth in fake encounter by army and other Human Rights abuses committed by Indian soldiers.

However, the police and paramilitary soldiers, who were deployed in strength across Indian Kashmir to foil demonstrations, swung into action and place the lawmaker Rashid under house arrested and detained two dozen of his supporters.

Rashid said he had tried to stage a sit-in to draw attention of Indian Prime Minister towards the killing of three innocent youth by Indian army in fake encounter and other Human Rights abuses taking place in the region.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived on a two-day visit to Kashmir amidst tight security measures.
Condemning the police action, the lawmaker said, “It is nothing but sham democracy”.

He said he wanted to drawn attention of Indian PM towards the Human Rights abuses being committed by Indian soldiers in the region. “I wanted to remind him of his pledge of Zero tolerance towards Human Rights violations,” added Rashid.
