In a statement which angered India, Pakistan army chief Gen Raheel Sharif has said Kashmir is “jugular vein” of his country.
Islamabad, May 1/Nationalturk-: Terming Kashmir as “jugular vein” of his country, Pakistan army chief Gen Raheel Shareef has said the Kashmir issue saying the issue should be resolved in as per United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
Addressing a ceremony to mark the Martyrs’ Day at army headquarters in Rawalpindi yesterday, Pakistan army chief said Kashmir was an internationally recognised dispute.
“Kashmir is a jugular vein of Pakistan and called for resolution of the issue as per UN resolutions and in line of the aspirations of the Kashmir people. It (Kashmir) is an international dispute for which UN resolutions also continue to exist,” General Raheel said
He said sacrifices of Kashmiris will not go in vein. “Pakistan Army is in favour of peace but is always ready to respond to any aggression in befitting manner.”
India and Pakistan have fought three wars on Kashmir to wrest control of it.
‘Kashmir resolution is crucial for peace’
Asserting that Kashmir resolution is crucial for the peace and stability of the region, General Raheel made it clear that without resolving the core issue between India and Pakistan, permanent peace in the region could not be achieved.
Pakistan civilian and military leaders often describe Kashmir as the “jugular vein”.
Kashmir is integral part of India: Congress
India has taken strong note of General Raheel’s comments and termed Kashmir as “integral part of India”.
Randeep Surjewala, Congress party spokesmen in India said Kashmir is and will always remain an important part of India”.
He said the solution to Kashmir problem will be decided according to the Indian Constitution.
“It would be better for the Pakistan army chief to look into his own country’s internal affairs, rather than advising India about Kashmir. The solution for Kashmir will be resolved as per the Indian Constitution,” he added.
