Srinagar, May 12: The hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has decided to challenge Indian lower court’s decision to award death sentence to two Kashmiris and lifer to another Kashmiri in 1996 bombing case in Supreme Court of India.
“We are discussing with lawyers the legal implication of death sentence awarded to three persons including two Kashmiris and lifer to another by an Indian court recently in 1996 bombing case. We will soon file a writ petition in Supreme Court of India to challenge the lower court’s verdict,” Geelani said in a statement issued here.
On April 22, 2010 District and Sessions Judge Delhi S P Garg awarded death penalty to three persons including two Kashmiris for their alleged involvement in 1996 bombing case in Indian capital. At least 13 persons died in the bombing.
He said the alliance of separatist groups headed by him have nominated Mian Abdul Qayoom (Kashmir Bar Association president) and Sayeed Abdul Rehman Geelani for supervising legal assistance in the 1996 bombing case. “Besides they will be providing legal assistance to other Kashmiris, who have been languishing in Indian jails since years,” he said.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of Geelani said people have responded positively to Geelani’s appeal for donation for providing legal assistance to the convicts.
“The government employees, traders, contractors and common people are visiting in large numbers to Geelani’s office and contributing towards the fund as per their capacity. The donations for the purpose of legal help to the convicts is beyond our expectation”, he said adding, “This proves that people want to help the Kashmiris framed by Indian court”.
