Karzai, Afganistan President chosen with no poll results
Hamid Karzai declared the president of Afghanistan with out the poll results by poll officials, after the second voting was scrapped by the Afghanistan election commission.
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) announcement comes a day after Mr Karzai’s sole challenger, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, pulled out of the race saying “I don’t believe any runoff could be a free poll or fair”.
Dr Abdullah was displeased with key poll officials and demanded they quit. He later on stated “I do not think it would be a free and fair vote he (Karzai) will become president with no poll results counted, if it was a free poll I would have carried on”
The new Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for a new government of national unity on Tuesday but rejected calls for a high-level purge to combat corruption.
The Taliban has declared a victory of their own, stating “the cancellation of a second round of voting was proof that the presidential elections were a fraud, and that the real selection of the country’s leader is made in Washington and London.”
Some officials have said without a free poll a country such as Afganistan can never have democracy with its full meaning. The votes poll should be fairly managed and no faul play should be present so that the poll results are reliable.
