Italian PM Berlusconi and key ally argue in public debate

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and a key ally and co-founder of the Party of Freedom which Berlusconi heads, Gianfranco Fini have an argument in front of party members and cameras during a rare public debate.

Italian’s were shocked yesterday to see Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and a key ally of the Party of Freedom, Gianfranco Fini have and argument in full view of the public.

It has been reported that Gianfranco Fini a co-founder of the Party of Freedom and lower house speaker had gotten angry and criticised Berlusconi’s style and substance of leadership.

Fini who was sitting in the front row of the of the hall which had 477 party representatives shouted during Berlusconi’s debate saying he is causing problems within the party as many people disagree with the 73-year-old prime ministers stance in many issues.

Fini carried on by attacking the governments tough rules on immigration which Berlusconi’s centre right party would do even before they came to power. Fini said that the immigration laws were not discussed or thought of properly and the laws were to harsh.

Mr Berlusconi who went on the podium after Mr Fini’s speech criticised the fact that he made political statements where as his position in the parliament requires him to be impartial.

Berlusconi said “A speaker of the house should not make political statements. If you want to make them, you should leave your post,” and also accused Mr Fini of “exposing the party to public mockery” as he criticised the party on TV.

Berlusconi continued “It doesn’t seem to me the issues you have raised are of great importance compared to what we have done as a government.”

These last words from the Italian PM angered Fini and prompted him to stand up and point his fingers at the Berlusconi and shout “What are you saying? What are you saying? … Are you going to kick me out?”

At the end of the meeting, Mr Fini said “I have no intention to leave the post of speaker of the house.”

Some Italian politics experts are already predicting that the government will fall as a major ally of the Party of Freedom and Berlusconi clash.
