Istanbul to host 2020 Champions League final, UEFA confirms

Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium will host the 2020 Champions League final.

The decision was taken at Thursday’s UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Kyiv.

The decision to give European club football’s biggest game to the Turkish venue was the main decision taken by UEFA’s executive committee in Kiev, where it has gathered for this year’s final between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Ataturk Olympic Stadium will host the 2020 Champions League final, 15 years after it provided the stage for Liverpool’s memorable comeback against AC Milan to claim the 2005 title.

Ataturk Olympic Stadium

The home of the Turkish national team, the Ataturk Olympic Stadium is the country’s largest stadium. Named in honour of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, the venue was opened in 2002 and has held major athletics events – and a U2 concert – as well as being a home for Istanbul clubs Galatasaray (2003/04), İstanbul Başakşehir (2007–14) and Beşiktaş (2013–16).

Ataturk Olympic Stadium is also one of the keystones of Turkey’s bid to host UEFA EURO 2024.
