Iraq executed Saddam Hussein trusted personal and presidential secretary Abed Hamid Mahmud. Saddams Hussein  secretary and chief bodyguard Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti was executed by hanging for crimes of genocide relating to the suppression of Iraqi Shia Muslims.

Abed Hamid Mahmud was the latest in a series of former senior regime officials who have been executed by Iraq’s new rulers since the toppling of Saddam Hussein during a United States-led invasion 9 years ago. His body was to be handed over to Mahmuds family later.

Abed Hamid Mahmond was a distant cousin of Saddam Hussein family. Al-Tikriti was number 4 on the list of Iraqi officials targeted by American forces following the 2003 US-led invasion behind only Saddam Hussein and his 2 sons Uday and Qusay.

A court official has told that personal secretary and bodyguard chief of dead Saddam Hussein Abed Hamid Mahmud, was executed for persecuting members of the Shiite opposition and religious parties that were banned under Hussein.Abed Hamid Mahmud was also among 15 high-profile defendants tried for their role in the uncerdible crushing of a Shiite uprising after the 1991 Gulf War.

Top Saddam aide executed in Iraq

Abed Hamid Mahmond was the fifth former Saddam official to be executed in Iraq after the dictator. Others, including former prime minister Tareq Aziz and intelligence chief Sadoun Shakir, have been sentenced to death but are still being held in prison.

The last official execution of a former regime  was in the last two years in January 2010, when Saddam Hussein’s notorious cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid known as “Chemical Ali” for his role in poison gas attacks, was put to death by hanging. Saddam Hussein’s long-term foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, was sentenced to death in 2010 and awaits execution.
