Infiltration bid foiled, 2 militants killed in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, May 26: Indian army on Wednesday claimed to have foiled an infiltration attempt of militants to sneak into Indian Kashmir from Pakistani controlled Kashmir (PcK) by killing two militants.

Infiltration bid foiled kashmirLt Col J S Brar, Indian army spokesman said army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (defecto border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir) in Tangdhar sector, some 145 kms North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir.

“The soldiers during routine patrolling detected suspicious movement and challenged the militants, who opened fire from automatic weapons. The fire was returned by the soldiers, triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight two militants were killed,” he said adding identity of the slain militants is being ascertained.
Brar said the search operation in the area is going on.

A senior police officer said army has widened the search operation to prevent the militants if any, from escaping from the area. “The exact number of militants, who were trying to sneak into Kashmir from PcK is not known. But since they have been infiltrating in groups of 2-4, the search operation has been launched to prevent other militants from escaping from the area,” he said.

Earlier, this year senior army officer in Kashmir Brigadier General Staff Gurmeet Singh had predicted hot summer in Kashmir on the militancy front. “According to estimates about 300 militants are active in Kashmir. This is going to be hot summer as approximately 400 militants are waiting in the wings in PcK to cross over to this side to step up violence,” he had said.

India has been accusing Pakistan of providing arms and training to the militants to fight Indian soldiers in Kashmir. However, Pakistan have all along been denying Indian allegations and terming Kashmir militancy as ‘indigenous movement’ of Kashmiri people.
