The right wing leader Narendra Modi has swept the polls in Indian State of Gujarat and is all set to continue as Chief Minister of the State for third term in a row.
New Delhi, Dec 20/Nationalturk- The right wing Hindu leader Narendra Modi will continue to be Chief Minister of Indian State of Gujarat as his rightwing party BJP has won the assembly elections of the State for third time in a row.
Modi’s BJP has won 118 of Gujarat’s 192 assembly seats. The party was leading in four more seats, which will take BJP’s tally to 122. It will be more than his 2007 tally of 117 seats.
Modi won the election from Maninagar constituency of Ahmedabad by a margin of 86,373 votes defeating political debutante Shweta Bhatt, wife of Sanjiv Bhatt, the senior policeman who went against Modi in Gujarat riots cases. Modi had in 2007 assembly elections won by 75,000 votes.
Congress party has won 55 seats and was leading in one seat. It had won 62 seats in 2007 assembly polls in Gujarat. The loss of Gujarat will be a major setback to Congress as the party has been unable to break the grip of Narendra Modi on the State.
Bigger win will give him bigger say in national politics
Modi’s BJP needed only 92 seats to form the government, but a bigger margin may give him more say in the party in national politics. Some BJP and other right-wing leaders have been pressing that he should be put up as Prime Ministerial candidate during 2014 parliamentary elections in India.
Even some of the posters in BJP’s party office in Ahmedabd, Gujarat’s capital read, “This is the trailer, watch the film in 2014; CM in 2012, PM in 2014 and Hit & Fit for PM.”
Reacting to his win and party’s spectacular performance in the assembly polls, Modi posted a tweet, saying, “No need of looking behind …FORWARD…We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience…”
I wish Modi should become Indian PM: Mother
“Modi has raised his stature by defeating anti-incumbency factor for the second time in a row. He will now definitely aim to venture into national politics,” political commentators said.
They said there have already been talks in the party (BJP) to pick him up as prime ministerial candidate of the party for 2014 Parliamentary elections.
“If given a choice, I would vote for Modi as the Prime Minister candidate,” senior BJP leader Smriti Advani told TV channel CNN-IBN.
Modi’s mother Hira Ba told TV channel Zee News that she wished that her son should now become Prime Minister of India.
“He has worked hard, he should now become PM. He does what he says,” she said.
She said Modi has won Gujarat. “My chest swells with great pride. He has to do lot more. Narendra will not stop here,” added Hira Ba.
It is pertinent to mention here that Narendra Modi’s government was accused of supporting Hindu rioters during anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002. Nearly 1000 Muslims were killed, hundreds injured and property of Muslims worth millions of dollars was destroyed by the Hindu rioters with tacit support of the administration.
