In view of growing casualties of Palestinians, the Indian parliament will discuss the Gaza situation on Monday.
New Delhi, July 21/Nationalturk – The upper house of Indian parliament will discuss Israeli aggression in Gaza on Monday.
The chairman of Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament, had agreed last week to allow a discussion on Gaza, where Israeli troops are committing “genocide” of Palestinians.
The issue for discussion on Gaza situation had echoed in the House for last two sessions consecutively. The Indian government agreed for discussion after initially resisting arguing that any discourteous remark could affect India’s relations with Israel and Palestine.
The death toll of Palestinians in over two weeks long Israeli aerial bombardment and ground operation has risen to 500. Among the dead are over 100 children including toddlers.
Indian lawmakers concerned over killing in Gaza
The Indian lawmakers belonging to opposition parties including Congress have expressed their concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and killings of Palestinian people in Israeli troops action.
The leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in his brief speech in upper house of Indian parliament had termed Israeli action in Gaza as a “one sided war”.
“We want good relations with both Israel and Palestine and are for peace and stability in West Asia, but we cannot accept the hostile approach of a country towards its neighbours. India has always believed in the policy of ‘live and let live’ and we want to continue with that stance,” he said said.
Stating that there has been an unprecedented spurt in violence in Gaza and this escalation is a matter of deep concern for the global community, Azad had appealed both Israel and Hamas to de-escalate the tension and announce a ceasefire in order to reduce the sufferings of the people.
‘Do something to stop killings in Gaza’
The Congress parliament members have been asking Indian government to do something to stop killings of Palestinian people in Gaza.
People in different parts of India have been staging nearly daily protests to express their solidarity with the Gaza people and condemn the Israeli aggression. They have been pressing Indian government to use its influence and get the killings stopped in Gaza.
Senior communist leader Sitaram Yechari had accused the rightwing Hindu party BJP-led Indian government of “bending over backwards to please Israel and the US”.
“The only reason for the government to adopt such an attitude is that the BJP does not want to displease Israel and the US due to its political affinity with them. It is rather bending over backwards to please them,” he had said.
