India will be observing anti-terrorism day on Wednesday (tomorrow).
New Delhi, May 20/Nationalturk – India will be observing anti-terrorism day on Wednesday (May 21) to mark the death anniversary of country’s former prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi.
Rajiv Gandhi, the former Indian PM, died in suicide bombing carried out by LTTE (Tamil rebels) of Sri Lanka in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
Since then, Indian observes May 21 as Anti-Terrorism Day. The day is marked by a pledge taking ceremony among other activities.
“The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the people from terrorism and violence. The debates, discussions, symposia, seminars, lectures, etc will be held in schools, colleges and universities on the dangers of terrorism and violence,” an Indian official spokesman said.
He said the anti-terrorism day is being observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on the people, society and the country as a whole.
‘Anti-terrorism/anti-violence pledge is taken’
“On the day, anti-terrorism/anti-violence pledge is taken in all government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions,” the spokesman said.
India has witnessed many deadly terrorist attacks in the past including attack on Indian parliament and 26/11 2008 Mumbai attacks in which over 170 people were killed.
Most of terrorist attacks in India have been blamed on militant groups operating in Pakistan.
