New Delhi, Feb 7/Nationalturk – Indian government has taken many steps to ensure safety and hassle-free movement of foreign and domestic tourists in the country
“The Tourism ministry has taken has advised all the State governments in country to deploy Tourist Police or other Police in the States to ensure safety of foreign and domestic tourists,” Indian Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi told lawmakers in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, upper house of parliament.
He said the State, where the tourist goes, is bound to ensure safety of the tourists. “Prevention of crime, including crime against tourists/foreign tourists is the primary responsibility of the state governments in the country,” he said.
India has 28 States. Besides, the country has also seven union territories, which are directly being administered by Indian government.
“Code of conduct for safe and honourable tourism”
Chiranjeevi said the government and stake holders involved in tourism sector have adopted the “code of conduct for safe and honourable tourism”. These guidelines have been framed to encourage tourism activities to be undertaken with respect for basic right like dignity, safety and freedom from exploitation of both tourists and local residents in particular, women and children.
The minister said the stake holders have identified focal points in their respective organizations to implement the guidelines.
There have been few cases of gang rape of foreign tourists in India in recent times.
“An advisory has been posted on the Ministry of Tourism website www.incredibleindia.org indicating that India remains safe destination for international Tourists including women tourists. Besides, the State governments in the country have introduced the “Tourist Police” in their state in some form or another to help tourists and make them feel safe”.
