At 4.30 a.m., the captain of the ferry alerted the German rescue coordination center at sea, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Bremen, operated by the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS), the DGzRS announced. At that time, the ship was about 19 nautical miles (about 35 kilometers) from Travemünde.
Frigate had prepared for evacuation
The crew prevented the fire from spreading further. According to the police, the almost 180 meter long ship had to be towed back to Travemünde. It got there at 7am. It was accompanied, among other things, by sea rescue cruisers. About 130 people are said to have been on board at the time. According to initial findings, no one was injured. The passengers did not have to be rescued from the ship. The crew of the Navy frigate “Rheinland-Pfalz”, which was also nearby, had prepared for this.
It is still unclear how the fire could have happened. The fire brigade and water police are on the ship and are getting an idea of the location of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
