Henri Lansbury hits a wonder goal as England U21s finish Belgium youngsters in fashion with 4-0.
London / NationalTurk – Henri Lansbury, Arsenal player on loan at West Ham, capped a stunning finish as England U21s closed in on a place at Euro 2013 in Israel with a comfortable 4-0 win over Belgium youngsters.
In the absence of usual U-21 coach Stuart Pearce, who was away battling Holland with the senior team, Brian Eastick took charge of the U21s for their game at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, and it was not long before Arsenal’s promisng forward Henri Lansbury had the crowd of nearly 23,000 on their feet.
Henri Lansbury : His wonder goal deliberate or just lucky
Henri Lansbury admitted there was more than a little luck in his wonder goal. The Arsenal player, on loan at West Ham United for 2012 season, revealed the super-goal had been wind‑assisted.
“I’d taken a bad touch and it was all I could really do to put it in the box, and the wind has carried it,” he said, before adding with a laugh: “I did see the keeper off his line though.” said the smiling Lansbury.
England interim U-21 coach Brian Eastick enlightened everybody with his answer : Lansbury had claimed in the dressing room that his shot was deliberate. But added ‘ Henri says he meant it, but I’m not so sure,’. ‘ He had a smile on his face when he told me but it was good to see it go in the net.’
Henri Lansbury : What a goal that was !
Henri Lansbury put England ahead with a stunning effort from the left touchline. Although many will argue it was a cross! Caulker then doubled England’s advantage with a close range header before Lansbury then got his second of the game with a well placed shot with Debutant Wilfried Zaha’s assist.
Arsenal’s highly-rated teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain concluded the convincing victory with a stoppage-time penalty.
With the result the Belgian’s hope to catch England at the top of Group Eight faded, and the only way that Norway could catch on England would be by winning all their remaining three games and hoping England drop points in their last two.
England’s remaining games are away to Azerbaijan on September 6 and at home to Norway at an as-yet undecided venue on September 10.
