Srinagar, June 8: As Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh returned to Indian capital after finishing his two-day visit to Indian Kashmir, a gunfight erupted between militants and Indian soldiers in Kashmir, causing death of a militant while an Indian paramilitary camp was attacked with a grenade on Tuesday evening.
A senior police officer said acting on intelligence inputs, police and army men launched combing search operation in the dense forest area of Lahanpathri, Aharbal in south Kashmir on Tuesday. “During the combing operations, the militants fired from automatic weapons towards the soldiers. The fire was returned and in the ensuing gunfight a militant was killed,” he said.
Without identifying the slain militant, he claimed that an AK 56 rifle, 3 magazines and a mobile set were recovered from the encounter site.
The police officer said some more militants, who were present in the area, managed to escape during the course of gunfight. “Additional police and army men have been rushed to the area and they have launched a massive combing operation to flush-out the militants,” he said.
The encounter erupted after Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh completed his two-day visit to Indian Kashmir and was returning to Indian capital. Indian Prime Minister had yesterday offered to talk to any group,
which opposes violence and terror.
Meanwhile, militants targeted an Indian paramilitary camp stationed isnside a cinema at Hawal in Srinagar, the summer capital of Srinagar on Tuesday evening.
“The grenade exploded inside the compounds with a big bang. However, fortunately none was injured and no damage was caused,” said paramilitary CRPF spokesman, Prabhakar Tripathi.
He said after the explosion police and paramilitary soldiers laid siege around the area and conducted combing and search operations. “No arrests took place,” he said.
