The gas reserves in Pakistan can last only for sixteen years.

Islamabad, March 6/Nationalturk – There is more bad news for energy starved Pakistan as the country’s gas reserves can last only for sixteen years.

Pakistan’s Petroleum and Natural Resources minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi told lawmakers in National Assembly (lower house of parliament) that the present gas reserves in the country can last only for 16 years.

“At the current rate of daily gas production, balance recoverable reserves will last about 16 years,” he said.

The minister said gap between demand and supply of gas is increasing with each passage of day because of depleting gas fields and increasing demand.

Pakistan facing acute energy crisis

Pakistan is facing acute energy crisis and power supply is supplied to people for less than 12 hours and gas supply is also not supplied regularly. The gas stations in the country remain closed for two-three days in a week, causing hardships to people.

“Pakistan government was taking several measures to overcome the shortage of natural gas,” the minister said adding 48 new licences have been granted to 12 local and foreign companies for exploration of oil and gas in the country in last few years.

He said the provincial governments have been directed to provide security cover and conducive environment to companies for carrying out gas exploration activities.
