At least 20 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the gangrape of a Swiss woman tourist in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
New Delhi, March 18/Nationalturk – Authorities in India have arrested at least 20 people for their alleged involvement in the gangrape of a Swiss woman tourist in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The 39-year-old Swiss woman tourist, who was on a cycling trip with her husband, was attacked by a group of unidentified people in a forest area at Datia in Indian State of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday evening.
The attackers also looted her and beat her husband. “The woman was allegedly gang-raped in presence of her husband,” police said.
The victim was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where medical tests have confirmed that she was raped and assaults.
A senior police official said rape case has been registered. “At least 20 people have been detained so far and their questioning is going on. We will soon find the attackers and rapists,” he said.
He said a camera, Rs 10,000 in cash and a laptop have also been snatched from the Swiss tourists.
“They (the couple) were coming from Orchha on a bicycle and decided to stay in a forest. A lot of tourists throng the area because of its forests. They were beaten up by few people who took away their laptops and cash besides raping the woman,” he said.
Swiss embasy demands swift probe
Meanwhile, Swiss embassy in India has called for a swift probe into gang-rape case and arrest of the accused.
The gangrape of the 39-year-old Swiss tourist comes nearly three months after the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men in a moving bus in Indian capital New Delhi. The victim later died in Singapore hospital of injuries, sparking public outcry and demands for death sentence to the six rapists.
