Gabalier concert triggers mini earthquake in Munich

But the Gabalier performance was not as impressive as another concert in Berlin.

Big crowds at the Munich exhibition center on Saturday evening – and there were apparently three small earthquakes, as the “Bild” newspaper reported on Tuesday. The earthquake expert Jens Skapski reported to the newspaper that the tremors were probably caused by jumping Gabalier fans.

In Munich, however, hardly anyone would have noticed: According to the newspaper, three measuring stations at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) recorded the tremors with a magnitude of 0.2 on the Richter scale – around 8:10 p.m. shortly after the concert began, Gabalier was just singing “Volks – Rock’n’Roller”.

Skapski on “Bild”: “In this case, the people of Munich could not feel it, but the sensitive instruments of the measuring stations could.” Others did a lot more, like the band Coldplay in July in Berlin. There the needle showed a magnitude of 1.5. Compared to the newspaper, Skapski suspected that a joint hopping action by all Gabalier fans could have caused the wobble: “It’s important that everyone hits the ground at the same time, so as much power as possible is transferred to the earth.”

90,000 spectators should jump

On Saturday, more than 90,000 fans celebrated the Austrian pop singer at his open-air concert on the grounds of the Munich Exhibition Center. The performance was actually planned as part of a “fan festival” in the summer of 2020, but was postponed twice due to restrictions caused by the corona pandemic.

Because of the crowds, the fire brigade and paramedics were also on duty. The “tz” reported that there were also 100 volunteers on site from the Johanniter alone. They also had their hands full in the evening: at 12:10 a.m., around one and a half hours after the end of the concert, the fire brigade reported on Twitter that many people had collapsed at the shuttle station. Without further ado, a medical station was set up to take care of the people.
