France tests potential nuclear missile

France is modernizing its medium-range missiles – and thus the carriers of possible nuclear weapons. After a successful test, production should now start.

France tested a modernized version of its nuclear-capable missile on Wednesday. The Department of Defense said the armed forces had “successfully” launched a “intermediate-range strategic air-to-surface missile” from a fighter jet. However, the rocket did not carry a warhead.

After the successful test, mass production of the modernized guided missile will now start. The missile will be used on both Air Force and Navy aircraft. The medium-range missiles of the ASMPA type were put into service in 2009 and are to be replaced by a new missile system (ASN4G) by around 2035.

France is the only EU country with its own nuclear weapons. The French armed forces can launch the nuclear missiles both from submarines and from the air.
