Former Turkish referee : Man. Uni. Galatasaray game was fixed
A former Turkish referee claims and admits Manchester United’s 1993 Champions League game returne game with Galatasaray was fixed anf the referee of the game was bribed by the Turks.
The match fixing scandal in Turkey that has shaken Turkish football is claimed to have its roots to former Champions League Competitions as claims from a former Turkish referee this week state that Galatasaray’s elimination of Manchester United from the Champions League tie in 1993 was fixed and Galatasaray corrupted the match official, Kurt Rothlisberger.
Ahmet Cakar a former referee and a prominent sports commentator in Turkey claimed Galatasaray Istanbul bribed game officials to fix the 0-0 draw in the 1993 Champions League game Galatasaray vs Manchester United, which put the Turkish side Galatasaray through at Manchester United’s expense.
Ahmet Cakar tweeted the claim Galatasaray bribed the match’s referee Kurt Rothlisberger and stated Sami Colgecen, a former Galatasaray executive, set up the bribery deal.
Kurt Rothlisberger sent off Manchester United star Eric Cantona at the end of the match in Turkey and the unforgettable Man. United star claimed at the time the official (referee) had been bribed by the Turks.
At the time, Eric Cantona told his native tongue issued L’Equipe: “I am certain referees constantly have been bought in the European Cup and I cannot see Kurt Rothlisberger had not also been bought.”
Kurt Rothlisberger, The Swiss referee, was banned for life by UEFA in 1997, after an investigation from UEFA resulted and the bribery attempt was brought to life in a European Champions League match between Grasshopper Zurich and Auxerre in 1996.
