Former South African police chief and Interpol President Jackie Selebi found guilty of corruption

The 60-year-old, who was also the former president of Interpol, was found not guilty of perverting the course of justice but was found guilty of accepting bribes.

It was alleged that Selebi had accepted up to $156,000 worth of bribes and possibly more and was also accused of having links to organized crime groups.

The former chief of police could get up to 15 years in prison at the sentencing hearing on 15 July.

However, Selebi has been released on bail and is currently free until his sentencing, but he has said that he will appeal to the decision.

The nine month case has been seen as one of the most important in recent history in South Africa and a signal that the country will not tolerate corruption.

Selebi had denied both charges in the case against him but an overwhelming case was well researched and founded by the South African security officials.

The main witness in the trial was a convicted drug smuggler and alleged organized crime boss, Glenn Agliotti who admitted that he and Selebi were friends and that Selebi would give security information to Agliotti in return for gifts and Money.
