In a major political development, the former president of Maldives Mohammed Nasheed Wednesday sought refuge in Indian embassy in Male.
New Delhi, Feb 13/Nationalturk – The former president of Maldives Mohammed Nasheed Wednesday sought refuge in Indian embassy in Male, capital of Maldives, following an arrest warrant against him.
Media reports said an arrest warrant was issued against him by Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court for not attending a court hearing on February 10 in connection with the detention of criminal court judge in January 2012, during his tenure as the president.
Nasheed failed to turn up at the previously scheduled trial hearing on February 10.
Reports said Nasheed’s appeal against the arrest warrant will come up for hearing later in the evening. “Fearing arrest, Nasheed took refuge in Indian embassy in Male”.
Sources said since Indian embassy is a designated diplomatic area, Nasheed cannot be arrested till the time he remains inside the complex.
They said Nasheed is holding talks with the Indian officials in the Indian embassy in Male.
Hundreds of policemen deployed outside Indian embassy
Authorities have deployed hundreds of policemen outside Indian embassy in Male to prevent Nasheed’s supporters from moving into the Indian embassy and prevent Nasheed from escaping from the area. The policemen have set up barricades around the embassy area.
Nasheed served as 4th president of his country from 2008 to 2012. He, was, however, ousted in February 2012 in a coup backed by former dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
It remains to be seen whether he surrenders to the authorities or continues to take refuge in the Indian embassy, thus prolonging the issue.

India should, (1) not think Nasheed is going to get elected with an election, do your own mathematics basing on pure intelligence not just here-say or some feeling. Nasheed, is just one party and look at the opposition and its size, where would the votes come from, who would vote for who. (2) Nasheed once been to the court, this is the second time he is requested to be at the court and he disobeyed. Refer to high court, supreme court, and the constitution of the Maldives (3) not interfere into the domestic affairs of a small state, and just because GMR may have been kicked out. (4) realize through cooperation there is more benefit to both the countries. (5) otherwise maldives would definitely have no option but to strengthen alliance with China.
