American multinational internet company called Yahoo has invited former long-time executive and key spokesperson for Google, Marissa Mayer to be its new chief executive.

Long-time Google executive Marissa Mayer — one of Silicon Valley’s best-known personalities — has already started her new work as Yahoo CEO, becoming one of the most prominent female leaders in business at the present time.

The struggling Internet giant announced yesterday that it is turning to 37-year-old Marissa Mayer — its fifth CEO in 5 years — to spearhead a massive turnaround effort that has gained little traction the past several years.

The tech world reacted with shock to the news. But it’s perhaps time everyone got used to the idea that Marissa Mayer, who was Google’s 20th employee and who is credited with the success of many of its most famous products became the new CEO of Yahoo company.

The job for Yahoo will be a big challenge for Marissa Mayer, as it would be for anyone, because Yahoo has been losing ground on virtually every measure, with sales flat or down for years. What’s more, there has been a steady exodus of talent as Yahoo changed direction and leadership multiple times in recent years and laid off thousands of workers.

At Google, Marissa Mayer earned kudos for her management of several key technologies and a reputation as a demanding perfectionist. Ex-Google executive Marissa Mayer molded the look and feel of some of the company’s best known, popular, and used products — services such as Google’s search, Gmail and Google News.

In one interview for the New York Times newspaper, Marissa Mayer has said that despite a great time at Google for the last 13 years, the decision to take the top spot at Yahoo was relatively easy, because Yahoo is one of the best brands on the Internet.

Marissa Mayer faces an additional challenge because she has never run a company, let alone a large one that’s essentially fighting for its life vs. runaway competitors such as Google, Facebook, and even Twitter. Even more important, perhaps, though she was apparently moved over to Google’s local efforts to revive them, she hasn’t faced a true turnaround situation before. Marissa Mayer could face a skeptical reception from investors, analysts, and especially Yahoo employees, who have seen 2 other outsider CEOs, Thompson and Carol Bartz, depart without making any headway.

With her appointment as the president and chief executive of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer joins a shortlist of women in the technology industry to hold the top spot. The elite club includes Meg Whitman, the chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, and Virginia M. Rometty, the head of IBM. Another senior woman in Silicon Valley, Sheryl Sandberg, is Facebook’s chief operating officer.

A new CEO chief of Yahoo has commented : ‘ I am honored and delighted to lead Yahoo, one of the Internet’s premier destinations for more than 700 million users. I am personally very excited to see another woman become CEO of a technology company. ‘
