Three days before his scheduled arrest, Indian film actor Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced three and a half years imprisonment by Indian Supreme Court, has sought more time to surrender before the apex court.

New Delhi, April 15/Nationalturk – The Indian film actor Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced three and a half years imprisonment by Indian Supreme Court, has sought six months to surrender before the apex court to face the jail sentence.

The 53-year-old actor, convicted under Arms Act for 1993 Mumbai blasts case, approached the Supreme Court today and sought more time to surrender to face imprisonment.

Dutt has moved the petition and urged supreme Court to put his punishment to abeyance. “I was a young man in 1993 and has done a lot of social work since then and so leniency should be shown towards him,” he has said.

Supreme Court had upheld Dutt’s conviction on March 21

The Supreme Court had on March 21 this year upheld Dutt’s conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. He was sentenced to serve five years in jail for illegally owning weapons including an AK-56 in a case linked to the 1993 bomb blasts. He was asked to surrender before four weeks (till April 18).

Since the actor has already served the imprisonment for one and a half year, he is supposed to undergo three and a half years imprisonment.

Dutt pleaded that he should be granted more time to surrender in order to complete his film projects as huge money has been invested by the filmmakers in these projects. “My arrest would hit this projects and cause losses to the filmmakers”.

The actor has maintained in the court that he knew nothing about the bombing plot and that he asked for the guns to protect his family after receiving threats during the city’s communal riots.
