FIFA’s Medical chairman criticizes players after serious injuries sustained

The top medical official at FIFA who is also one of the longest serving members of the executive committee has lashed out at players after several serious injuries were sustained globally in the opening few months of the leagues around the world especially Europe.

Dr Michel d’Hooghe who spoke to BBC Sport was seriously concerned with the actions of some of the players on the field who appear to deliberately “injure” or end the careers of other players.

D’Hooghe described some of the challenges by footballers at the highest level as “criminal” and “brutal”.

“Some players come on the field… simply to provoke injuries in other persons – to break a career,” said D’Hooghe to BBC Sport.

D’Hooghe continued “I have two eyes, where I can see what happens – how some acts are really criminal.”

The remarks came on the week where Newcastle United complained to the Football Association (FA) after a reckless challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong, left 23-year-old winger Hatem Ben Arfa with .

However, FIFA’s medical chairman D’Hooghe, did specify that he was not pin pointing certain players but his remarks came as a general evaluation of the game in the current period.
