Sir Alex Ferguson has said Wayne Rooney is “truly world class” after his late header at the Carling Cup Semi Final put Manchester Uniter 3-2 up and secured a spot in the final.
Manchester United will face Aston Villa in the final at Wembley after beating Manchester City 4-3 on aggregate.
Ferguson said, “His control (Rooney), his leading of the line, his penetration was absolutely fantastic, It was a wonderful performance, truly world class”
Rooney has scored a total of 21 goals in all competitions and is having the best season of his carrier.
United was trailing aggregate after the first leg at the Eastlands finished with Manchester City 2-1 up. The second leg of the fierce derby played at Old Trafford saw a goalless first half. However the game set alight with the start of the second half.
Rooney headed in the critical injury time goal which secured Manchester United at the final of the Carling Cup 2010.
Rooney said, “I know with our deliveries I will get chances and thankfully I took that one in injury time,” said Rooney.
Ferguson said, “You like to win your derbies, The atmosphere tonight and the fact it was a semi-final tie added a lot of spice to the match.
Former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez scored in the 76th minute to equal the two teams 3-3 on aggregate just before Rooney’s injury time winner.
Mancini the Manchester City boss said, “We played very well in the first half, in the second half there were 10 minutes when we were under pressure, when United scored two goals, I am sorry for my players and supporters because we have not made the final but this is football and sometimes when you make mistakes, you lose.”
