Thousands of Fenerbahce fans, upset and angry over match fixing allegations against their club and imprisonment of their president Aziz Yildirim, invaded the field during a friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk, assaulted media members and forced the cancellation of the match.

While the Turkish football federation is trying to decide whether to postpone the start of league play because of the matxh fixing scandal, Fenerbahce fans – many wearing masks and T-shirts, which the club officially put on market, bearing the image of imprisoned club chairman Aziz Yildirim – invaded the game pitch in the 67th minute of the game Thursday at Fenerbahce’s Sukru Saracoglu stadium in Istanbul.

The game started only hours after Aziz Yildirim published in a dramatized letter that he would step down.

On Tuesday, the Turkish Football Federation postponed the Turkish Super Cup final between Fenerbahce and Besiktas, planned to be played on 31th July, because both teams are implicated in the match fixing scandal probe. Both teams have club officials sent to prison.

Start of Turkish League still to be decided

Turkish Football Federation (TFF) president Mehmet Aydinlar stated that the scheduled league start on Aug. 5 is to be evaluated. He later said he was personally against an early August start due to hot weather in Istanbul. TFF previosly informed that the turkish league would start as planned despite the corruption in Turkey’s football community.

The prosecutor’s office in Istanbul has provided the federation evidences of match fixing probe comprised of testimonies and related documents of about 30 suspects involved and imprisoned in the match fixing scandal. Potential penalties include stripping Fenerbahce of last season’s championship title and relegating the team to the second division.
