The Boycott BP page which as of Wednesday, the day this article was being written had 744,278 members.
The popular social networking website has said that the page was accidently removed due to a technological glitch and has been restored.
According to some members, the page was restored after thousands of complaints were sent to Facebook due to the removal of the page.
On Monday, members and would be members of the Boycott BP page were redirected to the homepage of Facebook causing outrage.
The aim of the page is to persuade people to boycott BP stations worldwide after the Gulf of Mexico spill which is now officially the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States.
The description of the Boycott BP page writes “Boycott BP stations until the spill is cleaned up!…FOREVER. BP brands to boycott include” and the information continues by listing products which belong to the oil giant.
A spokesman for Facebook, Annika Heinle assured members of the group that there was nothing mischievous about the removal and that the network had flagged the page by mistake.
A statement by Facbook wrote “The administrative profile of the BP Boycott page was disabled by our automated systems, therefore removing all the content that had been created by the profile,”
“After a manual review, we determined the profile was removed in error, and it now has been restored along with the page.”
BP spokesman Robert Wine also said that BP had not been involved in the removal of the page.
Wine said “We had absolutely nothing to do with this. When we were first asked about it we contacted Facebook, and their mistake was rectified”.
