Exhumation of body initiated at late Turkish President Turgut Özal’s grave / Grave opening video
Officials opened the grave of late Turkish President Turgut Özal in Istanbul today, following an Istanbul prosecutor’s decision which ruled that the body should be exhumed over suspicious death details, daily NationalTurk reported.
Istanbul / NationalTurk – The exhumation operation began early in the morning when Deputy Public Prosecutor Oktay Erdoğan and forensic officers arrived at the mausoleum built for 8th president of Turkish Republic.
Security teams and a bomb squad were also present at the mausoleum.
Turgut Özal died of a heart attack on April 17, 1993 in his office in Ankara.
Turkey’s State Audit Board (DDK) ruled Özal’s death ‘suspicious’ and said it should be investigated, in a report released June 13. The controversy on Özal’s death focuses on the late president had been poisoned and not passed away due to natural causes.
