Denmark will be hosting Eurovision 2014 after Emmelie de Forrest won the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo last night.

It was not as convincing a victory as last year’s winner Loreen, though, with Emmelie and her song Tear Drops picking up just eight maximum 12-point scores from the 39 countries voting compared to Loreen’s 18 out of 42.

Second placed Azerbaijan attracted more top marks, with 10 countries awarding the maximum for Farid Mammadov’s performance of Hold Me.

Other countries to attract a maximum score were Ukraine, Italy, Norway, Greece, Russia, Belarus, Belgium, Hungary, Moldova, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The UK and Ireland both gave their maximums to Denmark.

There were 26 finalists competing in the show in the Malmo Arena.

As always, politics and neighborliness proved to be a dominating factor for many of the votes.

Welsh singer Bonnie, who scored huge hits in the 1980s with Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero, was the 15th act to perform on the night, which saw 26 acts take to the stage.

Although she didn’t received many points, she did received a rapturous reception from the audience following her performance of Believe In Me.

The 61-year-old star belted out the track in a black off-the-shoulder dress, and managed a quick ‘thank you’ following her set.

The UK endured disappointment again as Bonnie Tyler finished 19th with 23 points, though it was an improvement on Engelbert Humperdinck’s second-bottom finish last year.

And Ireland, who came 19th last year with Jedward, were left in bottom spot on just five points.

One of the most memorable performances came in the voting interval as host Petra Mede put on a comedy song poking fun at Sweden.
