Fulham have beaten German side Hamburg in the Europa League (Former Uefa League)Semi Final after come back from behind to book their place in the Final of the competition.
Hamburg had taken the lead through a beautiful free kick that even David Beckham would have been proud of. Mladen Petric’s 30 meter free kick literally glided through the air like a kite going to the top left hand corner of the goal.
Fulham however showed the character and spirit that they used during the demolition of Juventus at Craven Cottage to come back through a magnificent solo effort through Simon Davies and a in the area scuffle which led to Zoltán Gera poking the ball in.
This is the greatest moment in the clubs history as they have never come this far in Europe and their were even calls for Roy Hodgson, the Fulham boss to be named manager of the year after his team became the only English club to be left in the competition.
After the game Hodgson said “It would have been easy to lose their heads when we went down to a great goal and forget our shape and pre-match planning and play in a manner that doesn’t suit us, but we didn’t do that. We came back very well at the end of the first have and that continued in the second half.”
Fulham will now face Atletico Madrid at the Europa League final at the HSH Nordbank Arena, which is ironically the home ground of Hamburg, on 12 May 2010.
This was a great accomplishment for Fulham and let’s just hope they can do the same thing against Atletico.
After having poll amongst our senior editors at National Turk, We have chosen Mladen Petric’s Free Kick as the goal of the month in Europe.
