Eurochallenge Scandal : Besiktas wins but falls victim to FIBA’s logo rule
Besiktas’s 108 years old logo was not to be seen on Besiktas players jerseys in the most unheralded FIBA tournament Eurochallenge games against Leiden and Armia, which didn’ t go unnoticed and was called a scandal by Besiktas fans.
Istanbul / NationalTurk – According to a FIBA, Basketball’s governing body, rule teams participating in the Eurochallenge are prohibited to have anything else than FIBA Europe logo, sponsor name or advertising. The lack of Besiktas logo in the first two games at Eurochallenge tournament didn’t go unnoticed by Besiktas fans. The MİLANGAZ logo, Besiktas’s sponsor was right under Besiktas name and MİLANGAZ is the actual sponsor of the team, but it is owned by the disliked Besiktas chairman Yıldırım Demiroren.
The Besiktas fans first all thought it is a prank by Yıldırım Demiroren, but a research from NationalTurk revealed the true story behind the fate of 108 years old Besiktas logo, which is unique in Turkey, because it had earlier represented the Turkey National Team. FIBA bans use of team logos on jerseys.
The Eurochallenge is an unheralded tournament, the revenues won’t even compensate the expenses on away games even Besiktas wins the tournament, where it is arguably the best team. Besiktas fans criticise the reaction – or lack thereof- of Demiroren board to that development. No club logo no Besiktas says a fan motto. Mr Demiroren, is your company name more important than Besiktas?
