Euro 2012 Group A : Azerbaijan Vs Turkey 1-0 embarrassing result for Turks
One of the main targets of criticism was at Turkey manager Guus Hiddink who had been especially criticized after playing Sabri in the left back position against Germany on Friday even though he’s a right back and he has not played for his club Galatasaray regularly in two months.
Hiddink was also criticized by the media after the Dutchman had gotten angry at the Turkish media and people from the football community saying “we are talking as though we are the number one ranked team in the world”.
After yesterdays remarks, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager’s remarks came to haunt him as Turkey lost against Azerbaijan who are ranked 102nd in the official FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
Turkey’s performance was much better compared to the performance shown against Germany with over 19 shots taken against Azerbaijan, but that also shows the lack in Turkey’s attacking play in terms of not being able to score after 19 shots on goal.
Another very important factor is that the majority of the positions by the Turks were in the first half and the players rather than being more hungry, looking almost as though they were in a friendly.
The goal Turkey conceded was a joke. It was obvious that Azerbaijan had practiced the position over and over again but teams in the top tier of the world should be able to defend against such set pieces.
The goal came towards the end of the first half when Azerbaijan was awarded a corner. The ball was delivered on the ground towards the outside of the area where two Azerbaijan players jumped over the ball before captain Sadygov who plays club football in Turkey put the home side a goal ahead.
As the NationalTurk Sports editor I spoke with former football manager Hürser Tekinoktay in what is going wrong with Turkey’s National team?
Is there a problem with the tactics or the lineup of the National side or is there another problem that we are not aware of?
“In football tactics such as 4-3-3, 4-2-2, 4-5-1 and others al mean something (in a football game)…
But the important thing is;
Where is your game (being played on the field),
How you want the game to be played…
And what you expect from your team.”
