“Pakistan so far received requests from European Union and National Democratic Institute for monitoring country’s general elections,” said Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry in his weekly briefing.

The general elections in Pakistan are scheduled to be held on May 11 this year. The elections will be held under the care-take government, which took over reins of the country after PPP-led coalition government completed its terms. It was for the first time in Pakistan’s history that an elected political government had completed its full tenure of five years in office.

Aizaz said advance and core teams of EU observer mission are already in Pakistan while NDI wants to send 57 observers for the purpose.

“The EU Observer Mission’s core team is already in Pakistan and is preparing for its mission,” he said.
The Pakistan Foreign office spokesman said the head of the EU Observers Mission Michael Gahler is expected to be in country next week. “After his arrival, he is scheduled to meet Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary and others concerned officials”.

Sources said EU mission will remain in Pakistan to observe the final counting of votes and any complaint procedures, and to prepare a full report including recommendations to improve the electoral process.
