Manchester United 2 Tottenham 3:Tottenham Hotspur ended their Old Trafford hoodoo and beat Man United 3-2 there for the first time since 1989 

The most dramatic game was at Old Trafford where Spurs had not beaten United since a Gary Lineker winner 23 years ago – and not beaten them in any of their last 22 Premier League clashes home or away.

In that time they have led United on a number of occasions and 11 years ago to the day were 3-0 up against them at halftime at White Hart Lane before losing 5-3.

So despite Jan Vertonghen putting Spurs ahead after two minutes and Gareth Bale making it 2-0 after 32 minutes after a charging run and shot through the heart of the United defence, there was no taking victory for granted.

United, outplayed in the first half, controlled the game in the second after Wayne Rooney replaced Ryan Giggs and they pulled one back when Nani touched in Rooney’s cross six minutes after the break, the first of three goals in less than three minutes.

Spurs replied almost immediately in the 52nd minute when Clint Dempsey fired into an empty net when United keeper Anders Lindegaard saved from Bale – but Spurs’ lead lasted only one minute before Shinji Kagawa wriggled through a static Spurs defence to make it 3-2.

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 2: Good Leeson by Chelsea to Arsenal Wenger still insist non ability French striker Giroud

Chelsea beat Arsenal in the lunchtime sunshine at the Emirates, inflicting Arsenal’s first defeat of the season.

Torres put the European champions ahead after 20 minutes when Arsenal defended poorly at a Mata free kick with Torres holding off Laurent Koscielny to hook a volley home.

Gervinho equalised with a superb turn and shot after 42 minutes before Mata scored what proved to be the winner after 53 minutes when his free kick flew home, clipping Koscielny’s leg on the way past stand-in keeper Vito Mannone.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo told Sky Sports: “I thought we were excellent today and deservedly won the game.

“From the start to the end we never defended too deep, we tried to take the initiative and go forward and create chances and the game went for us today.”

Di Matteo also praised captain John Terry who played a commanding role in defence despite the cloud of a four-game ban hanging over him after he was found guilty by the FA of using racist language to Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

“It was the right choice to play John, he showed leadership and what a good defender he is,” Di Matteo said.

Disappointed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “We were a bit nervous at the start … But we should never have lost this game.

“It is sad because we gave the game away at home, we conceded two soft goals on set pieces. They had three shots on target and scored two goals and you cannot concede goals at home like we did today.”

Norwich 2 Liverpool 5 : At least Liverpool win Barclays Premier League with super Suarez

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers fears Luis Suarez has acquired a reputation for diving that will haunt him for the rest of his career.

Suarez put in a dazzling performance at Norwich on Saturday, scoring three goals and setting up another in the Reds’ 5-2 win at Carrow Road. But one thing tarnished the Northern Irishman’s first victory – yet another refusal by the match officials to award Liverpool a penalty after a foul on Suarez.

“I could tell you about three or four strikers who go down in the box with very minimal contact, and all of them have had penalties this year,” Rodgers said. “Everyone in the ground saw it was a penalty. Apart from the referee.”

Leon Barnett clearly barged Suarez over and brought his elbow down on the forward’s shoulder in the box, but referee Mike Jones did not give the spot-kick despite strong protests from the away players.

Last week Suarez was denied a penalty despite being fouled by Jonny Evans and the week before he received a yellow card for simulation against Sunderland, although replays confirmed the penalty shout was legitimate.

Rodgers’ frustration with officiating in Liverpool’s games so far this season came to a head earlier this week when he called referees’ chief Mike Riley to complain his team were not getting enough correct decisions.

He insists he cannot ponder on the matter for too long, however.

He added: “We just have to concentrate on building our game, developing our football, and hopefully these penalties that we don’t get won’t come back to haunt us.”

Unlike Liverpool, Norwich never looked like ending their winless streak. But Norwich have performed better after their 5-0 hammering of Fulham on the opening day of the season and defender Russell Martin thinks the defeat was not a true reflection of the talents at Chris Hughton’s disposal.

“The real Norwich is what you saw in the last three or four weeks – not what you saw against Liverpool,” Martin said. “We are deflated at the moment, but we have a work ethic in that dressing room that has got us to where we are over the last few years and it remains the same.”

Everton 3 Southampton 1: Blue Knight silent rising 

Everton produced a commanding 3-1 defeat of Southampton at Goodison Park to continue their impressive start to the Premier League season.

Southampton, whose difficult start continues after losses to both Manchester clubs, Wigan and Arsenal already this season, opened the scoring on six minutes through summer signing Gaston Ramirez.

Leon Osman equalised for Everton before man of the match Nikica Jelavic added two in the first half to end the scoring – and could have had more after terrorising the Saints defence.

It was a slow start from the Toffeemen and they found themselves a goal down early on.

Rickie Lambert claimed a corner off the toe of Kevin Mirallas – a decision the crowd did not agree with, but which replays seemed to back up – and home goalkeeper Tim Howard was rooted as Ramirez headed into a vacant goal at the back post.

Southampton covered the Everton passing options, playing high up the pitch, to force them into long balls, with little movement from the men in blue.

The fans stayed with them however and were rewarded for their patience on 25 minutes when Osman finished into the top corner as the ball fell invitingly for him after Jelavic attacked a cross.

That was the start of an onslaught, with Jelavic causing problems for Nigel Adkins’s men from a seemingly endless stream of crosses.

Southampton held out for seven further minutes. Mirallas embarked upon a lovely dribble near halfway, playing a one-two with the fearsome Marouane Fellaini, before finding Croatia striker Jelavic in the box – and he picked out the bottom corner with an excellent finish.

Five minutes further on, Paulo Gazzaniga somehow clawed a Jelavic header away following a cross from Osman, but a minute later he was picking the ball out of the net a third time.

Seamus Coleman cut inside and angled into the box, leaving two Southampton defenders for dead, and his cross past the back post was headed in by Jelavic. Saints had no answer for the deadly frontman with Japanese centre-half Maya Yoshida run ragged despite putting in a solid performance.

The pressure continued, with Fellaini heading against the bar from a corner right at the end of the half, and Southampton were ultimately happy to go in only two goals down despite their bright start.

Saints produced some decent football in the second half, but were too tentative in the final third.

In contrast Fellaini was a monster in winning the ball in midfield and rifling a drive just wide of the far post halfway up, the ball taking a slight deflection. Osman then bent a low shot just wide.

Ramirez should have scored a second for Saints with 20 minutes remaining after ghosting into the box on to a Lambert through-ball and flicking over Howard and wide of the far post, while only an outstanding Howard save prevented the prolific Lambert from scoring with his head.

Southampton stay 17th, a point clear of QPR in bottom spot having conceded 12 goals in their opening three away games, but it is not all doom and gloom for them, as last week’s home win over Aston Villa showed.
