Somethings wrong in Manchester United, Arsenal getting stronger everyday and time has come for Liverpool.
Manchester United 1 West Bromwich 2:David Moyes must carefull
David Moyes showed Ferguson’s assistant Mike Phelan, first-team coach Rene Meulensteen and goalkeeper coach Eric Steele the door when he took over from the legendary scot.
And with United down in 12th in the Premier League, having lost 2-1 at home to West Brom on Saturday, it is a decision that looks to have backfired.
Keeper coach Steele – who is credited with reversing the fortunes of initial struggler David De Gea at the champions – claims Moyes ignored pleas from Ferguson to retain his backroom staff.
“He listened to the manager’s advice, but he wanted to be his own man,” Steele told Red Devils magazine Inside United.
“He spoke to me, Mick and Rene. I told him I thought it was a brave decision. I didn’t want to leave. Why would I? I knew that David was coming in and wondered who he’d bring.
“You had the United perspective — the manager saying, ‘Keep what we’ve got, keep the continuity, work with them and they’ll guide you through. You’re taking on a massive machine here. You’ve gone from Marks and Spencer’s to Harrods.”
Steele admits he understands Moyes’ position, who replaced him with former Everton keeper coach Chris Woods.
Steve Round also followed Moyes from Goodison Park to continue as his assistant, as did first-team coach Jimmy Lumsden.
A United feel remains on the bench with Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs taking on coaching roles under Moyes.
But Steele has questioned why Moyes broke up Ferguson’s backroom staff so comprehensively.
“And then there’s David’s viewpoint, which I understand,” Steele added. “I know him professionally. I know his work ethic, his hands-on approach.
“I don’t blame him for doing what he did. I’ve been in the game long enough to know how it is.
“But you’ve just been part of a team that has had a great season and won the league.
“Does it make sense that you’re not retained to continue the good work? Sadly, that’s out of my hands.
“My time was up, I’m proud of what I did at United and I have great memories.”

The 18-year-old German scored his first senior Gunners goal in Saturday’s 2-1 Barclays Premier League win at Swansea, and his pace and trickery proved a constant thorn in the side of the home defence.
During his 17-year stint in charge of Arsenal, Wenger has been renowned for his ability to develop young players into first-team regulars.
Gnabry’s goal made him Arsenal’s second-youngest Premier League goalscorer – Cesc Fabregas being the youngest.
Gnabry may have a long way to go before he can be compared to players of Fabregas’ calibre, but Wenger has been very impressed by the way the teenager, who was just 14 months old when the Frenchman took charge of Arsenal, has contributed.
“He is surprising,” Wenger said.
“He has the talent, but he has the personality on the pitch as well.
“He doesn’t look timid, he looks to play with belief and, of course, talent.
“Unfortunately he is another player for Germany, he’s not English.
“He was one-year-old when I came to Arsenal, I can’t believe it. Now I have some players in my squad who were not born when I arrived at Arsenal.
“The two players who scored (Gnabry and Aaron Ramsey) have a combined age of 40.”
Although Swansea boss Michael Laudrup was disappointed at how a lack of composure had cost his side dearly in the second half, he did reserve particular praise for a young talent of his own in left-back Ben Davies.
The 20-year-old was the best player on the field in a white shirt, and scored his side’s goal after linking up well with Wilfried Bony.
The Wales international has picked up where he left off after an excellent first season of senior football, and Laudrup said: “It was great to see. He is a young player who is still coming forward and gaining experience.
“He’s a good boy, who is very intelligent as well. It’s good to see players like that.”
Swansea have already faced Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal so far this season, meaning Laudrup is better placed than most to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the title contenders.
But he believes it is far too early to try to predict if Arsenal have what it takes to still be on top of the pile come mid-May.
“I don’t know if they are title contenders, there have been some surprise results this weekend,” he said.
“Manchester United lost to West Brom and Manchester City have lost two games away to Aston Villa and Cardiff.
“So Arsenal and Tottenham are on top, but there are 32 games to play. But no-one can take what you already have on the board away from you.”

The Uruguayan scored twice on his first league appearance since April 21 as his side put Sunderland to the sword 3-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Sturridge created both of Suarez’s goals and also scored himself, taking his tally to 11 in his last 11 league appearances, as Liverpool underlined their title credentials.
Boss Rodgers said: “I’m not sure there are two better strikers in the league.
“There are some wonderful partnerships around, like Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, but those two are right up there with the best.
“They are two different types as well. Sturridge has pace and power while Suarez can shift his body very quickly, which is always tough to defend.”
Suarez’s future at Anfield was in doubt after he was given a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and made clear his desire to leave during the summer.
But Liverpool held firm and are reaping the benefits of the striker, who unveiled a T-shirt paying homage to his new-born son Benjamin after scoring.
Rodgers said: “Suarez has a remarkable mentality. His determination and focus are amazing and he is like a new signing for the club.”
Sturridge, whose goal flew in off his right arm, said of Suarez: “It’s great to have Luis back because he’s one of the best forwards in the league and we’ve formed a great partnership.”
The result was a major blow to Sunderland caretaker boss Kevin Ball’s hopes of landing the job on a permanent basis.
Gus Poyet heads a list of candidates to replace the axed Paolo Di Canio. Sunderland remain bottom of the table with just one point from six games.
