The Chelsea midfielder’s second half strike proved to be decisive as England emerged 2-1 winners over World Cup 2014 hosts Brazil and recorded their first victory over the five time World Champions since 1990, at the Wembley Stadium.
Brazil started out confidently with Neymar threatening in attack, as veteran Ronaldinho won an early spot kick for the Canarinho in the 16th minute, after the ball hit Jack Wilshere’s hand inside the box.
The 32-year old stepped up to take the penalty but was denied by the strong wrists of Joe Hart.
The Three Lions got their act together as Wilshere was looking to make amendments for his previous error.
The Arsenal midfielder played a delicate through ball into the path of Theo Walcott whose following shot was saved by Julio Cesar, but only to be parried back into the path of Rooney, who smashed a shot passed the entire crowd inside the box, as England took the lead.
Brazil missed a great chance to equalize as an inch perfect cross from Oscar across the face of the goal was somehow smashed above the bar from Neymar from less than 3-yards out.
Three minutes after the restart, Brazil were back at level pegging as Garry Cahill overran the ball deep in his own half, and Lucas Moura bounced on to the ball, which eventually fell into the path of Fred, who took a touch and buried it into the top corner.
Just seconds later another error by England saw a heavy pass from Hart bounce off Cahill and into the path of Oscar who fed the ball to Fred. The Brazilian hit a perfect curling shot, but it hit the cross bar.
Then it was England’s turn to capitalize on an error, as a wayward pass from Cesar found Rooney, whose pass to Lampard was cannoned past Cesar from outside the box and into the back of the net.
In the end England were able to hold on to a historic victory over Brazil.
