The Durban International Film Festival was officially opened 34 years ago and has continued to showcase the best movies Africa has produced in the past years on the continent.
The annual film festival takes place in Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province and it is one of the oldest and largest film festival in Southern Africa and presents over 200 screenings celebrating the best in South African, African and international cinema altogether on a single platform.
The 34th edition of this year’s events will kick start on the 18th to the 28th, July and the film festival will celebrate African cinema including creative fiction videos and documentaries from all over the continent in ten days of the event in the busiest and accommodating city of Durban.
The event is organized by the Centre for Creative Arts of the University of KwaZulu-Natal with support from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the National Film and Video Foundation, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism, the City of Durban, German Embassy, Goethe Institute, Industrial Development Corporation, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture among others.
The city of Durban will be illuminated by the glow of the silver screen, with over 250 screenings in 11 venues across the city and the best of contemporary cinema from around, comprising 72 feature films, 48 documentaries and 45 short films.
The festival will also offers a comprehensive workshop and seminar programme that will facilitates the sharing of knowledge and skills by film industry experts aimed at contributing skills transfer and industry development and drawing on the knowledge, skills and insights of a range of industry experts and filmmakers from the African Continent and the rest of the world.
It is expected that forty African filmmakers and film experts will come together in Durban to be inspired and enlightened in the medium and industry of cinema which is growing at a faster rate on the African continent.
This year’s nominations of candidates were chosen from over 450 submissions and they hail from 15 different African countries. The nominees include Drifa Mezenner-Algeria, Pierre Loti Tawokam Simo-Cameroon, Tumbo John Wani-Democratic Republic of Congo, Alia Hassab-Egypt, Kamal Elmallakh-Egypt, Dawit Zewedu-Ethiopia, Hiwot Getaneh-Ethiopia, Anita Afonu-Ghana, Joseph Wairimu-Kenya, Mercy Mkaiwawi Mwakab-Kenya, Sarah Muhoho-Kenya, Ng’endo Mukii-Kenya, Saad Eddine Said-Morocco, Inadelso Cossa-Mozambique, Oshosheni Hiveluah-Namibia, Aderinsola Ajao-Nigeria, Adeyinka Edward Daniyan-Nigeria, Kayambi Musafiri-Rwanda, Thiaw Rama-Senegal, Antoinette Engel-South Africa, Ari Kruger-South Africa, Caitlin Pansegrouw-South Africa, Dylan Bosman-South Africa, Howard Fyvie-South Africa, Katey Lee Carson-South Africa, Maanda Ntsandeni-South Africa, Nduduzo Shandu-South Africa, Nosipho Sharon Mngoma-South Africa, Pierre Paul De Villiers-South Africa, Rolisizwe Nikiww-South Africa, Siphamandla Ngcobo-South Africa, Siphiwe Dominic Mpanza-South Africa, Sivela Mgudu-South Africa, Zethu Mashika-South Africa, Zwelethu Radebe-South Africa, Ahmed Jlassi-Tunisia, Narjes Torchani-Tunisia, Nathan Magoola-Uganda, Polly Kamukama-Uganda, Tapiwa Chipfupa-Zimbabwe.
The Festival will be warmly welcoming all visitors and tourist all over the world to witness the best of African film and taste the rich nature of the city of Durban especially, its sunny beaches.
