Disaster in Zambia: 53 passengers Perished in a gory car accident in Lusaka / Africa News

Local reports from the Zambian Capital indicate that at least 53 people have been killed in a crash involving a bus and lorry in Zambia.

The Zambian Police says the death toll could rise as rescuers have rescued victims who are in critical condition from the wreckage which happened in the north of the capital.

The accident occurred about 100km (60 miles) north of the capital Lusaka on a two-lane highway known for heavy traffic which many preliminary attributes to probably over speeding or overloading

The accident is considered one of the worse road disasters in the history of the country due to the casualties involved.

The bus was operated by the Zambia Postal Service, which provides passenger services on buses which carry post, and was full of people travelling to their destinations.

A survivor was quoted by local reporters as saying the bus had been swerving to avoid an oncoming vehicle (lorry) which was driving on top speed.

But the Zambian Police has put out an official statement that it is launch a full scale investigation into the crash to establish the cause of this unfortunate incident

President Michael Sata extended his government’s deepest condolences to the families of the victims saying his government will console and give the necessary help to the families.
