Chile earthquake could have been much worse say’s officials.

The earthquake that hit Chile was more powerful then the earthquake that devastated Haiti earlier this year and killed over 150,000 people.

However the damage caused by the Chile earthquake was minimal compared to Haiti with around a few thousand dead.

Chile was very fortunate due to geological luck as the earthquake was centered offshore and about 21 miles underground, minimising its force by the time it reached towns and cities and human preparation as Haiti has lived through a huge earthquake in 1960.

One of the most severely damaged areas in the country was the town of Curico, which is very close to the epicentre of the earthquake.

Homes and churches were damaged in the town and around 90 percent of the towns historic centre was crushed. The quake damaged or destroyed 1.5 million homes, buckled roads and toppled bridges.
